Since 1982 Carlos Martínez has constructed a world of theatre that unites temperament and nuance with modern mime technique. As a passionate observer of our humanity, he reveals seemingly insignificant encounters where we discover our own reflection. The actor transforms the ordinary events of daily life into extraordinary performances with the skill of an artisan and the wisdom of an artist who continually investigates further into his work, stirring our capacity to laugh and cry at the human condition.

For his jubilee show, Time to Celebrate, Carlos Martínez first offers us a showcase of his most emblematic pieces. Each night he will decide which of the stories from his collection of polished jewels he will display on stage: the gentle flutter of the butterfly, the watch that narrates a family chronicle, the barber as a malevolent rebel… The second half of the program develops a theme that has always intrigued the Spaniard, that of time. Carlos Martínez approaches such a transcendental theme with irony and humour in order to open the door to hope. We climb the stairs with an old timekeeper to the top of the bell tower and when he pulls on the cord to ring the bell we enter into his world of silent monologues. As he “narrates” his memories and dreams, we listen with our eyes and are transported to a motorcycle race, a baby’s crib, a basketball game, perhaps a wedding… and ultimately to engage in a wonderful dialogue about our own humanity.

Time to Celebrate is Carlos Martínez’s delightful gift to all the people who have affirmed his decision to work as a mime by coming to the theatre to see him- a sincere expression of his appreciation to his audience. He offers us a joyful experience by constantly moving the boundaries of silence and stimulating the unstoppable fancy of our imagination.

After twenty-five years of silence, it’s Time to Celebrate!
